This 1972 Holden HQ GTS Monaro Coupe has been completely transformed into a custom street machine! According to the ID plates the car left the GMH Melbourne factory as a V8 GTS Coupe finished in Lime Green Metallic paint with Antique brown interior. This particular car spent the first 30 years of its life as a circuit racing car built to race the Formula 5000 cars at Bathurst. Prior to its rebuild into what you see here, the car was a heavily prepped track car with all of the fruit. It underwent a nine year transformation eventually become the street machine you see here today.

Starting with the body, the car was stripped down, it had been fitted with a WB front end at some point so it was restored to its original GTS glory through sourcing a new front clip. With things made right again, the car was completely repainted in House of Kolor Sunset Gold. You may notice the ghosted GTS striped over the bonnet and boot which give it a subtle nod to how it began life. The chrome bumpers were replaced and the look externally completed with a set of Intro Victory billet wheels measuring 20×9” up front and 20×10” in the rear.

Inside the car has been completely retrimmed in black leather with orange stitching but still has a slight nod to its race car heritage. The chrome-moly roll cage including side intrusion bars remains in place along with some retrimmed race buckets up front. New RPM Race Gear harnesses keep you safe and in place. The dash is colour coded and fitted with a host of Autometer gauges to keep an eye on what’s happening under the bonnet. There is a B&M Quick shifter on the floor and custom door cards to match the seats.

Pop the bonnet and things get serious quickly with a modern 6.0L LS V8 engine fitted with twin turbos. The engine started as a new crate LS2 and was sent to Kent at Hi-Torque Performance who worked his magic on it. The engine is blueprinted and balanced with compression lowered to 10.0:1, ARP head stud kit, Cometic head gaskets, Isky double springs, Comp camshaft, roller rockers, 102mm big mouth throttle body and Fast Fuel rails. The engine is force fed air by twin Garrett 3076 Turbo chargers sitting on custom manifolds through a front mount intercooler sitting behind the grill. There is a PWR power steering reservoir, relocated coil packs and NRE rocker covers. Keeping things cool is a custom alloy radiator with electric thermo fan. Exhaust gasses are expelled through a twin three inch exhaust system with Ultraflow mufflers and screamer pipe straight to atmosphere.

The engine is paired to a built Turbo 400 automatic transmission that has been fully manualised with a 2800 rpm converter. Power is fed to the rear wheels through a fully built nine inch diff with Detroit locker, billet axels and 3.55 gears. The brakes have been upgraded to 330mm discs all round with Corvette twin piston calipers front and rear and all braided lines. The suspension has been upgraded with custom coil overs, DeCarbon shocks, fully fabricated suspension arms and heavy duty sway bar. The fuel system is located in the boot and features a 120L hand polished drop tank with swirl pots and custom surge tank.

Upon completion the car had a full feature in Xtreme Holdens magazine issue 32 as well as being featured on the front cover and as the pull out poster. These HQ Monaro coupes are always extremely popular and this one certainly has some tricks up its sleeve with some modern engineering hidden underneath. The car is fitted with a QLD mod plate and has been previously QLD registered.
