This 1972 Holden HQ Panel Van has been through an extensive, ground up build with some awesome modifications. The Van was purchased by the previous owner mid 2015, with the intention of building it into a cool street van. When people think about modified vans, they often think about crazy murals, fluffy interiors and funky 70s fit outs. This van is quite the opposite, still a well built and tough modified street van, but understated, minimalistic and clean in its execution.
The van was completely stripped down with the body off the chassis for a full rebuild. It received new GTS style front fluted guards, new radiator support and nose cone. The floors and tunnel were modified to accommodate the new gear box. The entire body was then repainted in clean crisp white paintwork in 2020 with Sandman decals applied. The front and rear bumper bars are all new as are the door handles, lights, surrounds and mirrors. The car is set up for a tow bar and wiring plug under the rear. Completing the look on the outside is a set of 18” Bonspeed Clutch billet wheels.
The interior of the van has been custom fitted out and trimmed in keeping with the minimalistic theme using black vinyl with white contrasting stitching. The front seats are out of a VZ Commodore and provide extra comfort and support over the standard units. There is a custom center console trimmed to match with storage bin in the centre. GTS style dash and steering wheel sit up front with three pedals on the floor and manual shifter. In the back again is all fitted out and trimmed to match with neat storage bins down either side (the left one housing dual batteries), full length head liner and neatly carpeted floor. Keeping the cabin comfortable is ‘Vintage Air’ air conditioning.
Under the bonnet is a tough built 400ci Chev V8 engine. The build features a Dart block, all new internals and aluminium heads. The package makes a healthy 350hp at the rear wheels and has only travelled around 2,000 kms. The engine bay is very well presented with serpentine belt kit on the front of the engine, polished rocker covers and overflow tanks. The engine is paired to a 6-speed manual transmission from a VY-VZ Commodore which was rebuilt in 2020. Power is fed to the rear wheels through a Dana 60 diff with 3.55 gears and True-trac centre. The suspension is rebuilt standard with lowered springs and Koni shocks. Likewise the brakes are the rebuilt standard power assisted discs up front and drums in the rear. The whole car was completely rewired and upgraded with a dual battery setup.
