This 1971 Holden HQ Monaro coupe has been through an extensive ground up rebuild into to a mild custom Aussie Muscle car. The previous owner purchased the car approximately six years ago. At that stage it was a rolling shell, it had glass, windows and regulators but that was about it. A lot of parts had to be sourced including all the chrome and interior. He purchased the car with the intention of doing a full rebuild which ended up taking approximately two and a half years to complete.

To start the project, the body and chassis were separated. The body was then sand blasted and etch primed on a rotisserie. It did have some rust repairs to be done including a front drivers side floor pan and rear passenger side floor pan. The lowers of the rear quarters were replaced along with a patch in the boot. Brand new door skins were purchased through Retro Rods along with all new GTS style front guards, new nose cone and a new wiper plenum. The original bonnet and boot were reused. The car then sent to Phil Cribb Panels who painted the car in ā€˜Mazda Crystal Soul Redā€™ which is a three layer pearl. To give it a bit more attitude, GTS stripes were applied using GMH black. The front and rear chrome bumpers are all new items, as are the tail lights and indicators. Completing the look on the outside is a set of OS Formula GTS wheels measuring 15×7ā€™ up front and 15×8ā€ in the rear.

Open the door and you will find a fully refinished interior from top to bottom. The original seats were recovered in original GMH black vinyl from Winner Products as were the door trims. The dash contains the full GTS gauges with the original dash pad recovered locally. Whole floor and firewall were covered in Dynamat sound deadner before getting new carpets, new kick plates and new retractable seat belts. The original radio remains in the dash for looks only (lights up but not hooked up), however in glovebox there is a Gravel Rash system which is all Bluetooth with control box in glove box. Current owner is auto electrician by trade so he naturally rewired the whole car headlights to tail lights.

Under the bonnet now lives a 350ci Chevy V8 which was purchased for the car and rebuilt by Morey Warnock Engine reconditioners in Wodonga. The engine received a factory style rebuild but was upgraded with a mild cam, Edelbrock manifold and Brawler Carb. Exhaust gasses are expelled through Pacemaker headers into an x-pipe and 2 Ā½ inch dual exhaust. The engine is paired to a Turbo 350 automatic transmission that has been fully rebuilt with stage 2 shift kit and shifted using a floor mounted Quick Shifter. Power is fed to the rear wheels through a rebuilt original 278 Salisbury differential. While the car was apart, the chassis was all sandblasted and repainted black. All new body rubber were used before the two were mated back together. Ā The brakes have been fully reconditioned for safety and the suspension has been refurbished with new bushes, ball joints, tie rod ends and lowered using king coil springs.

These HQ Monaro coupes are always extremely popular when we get them through the showroom and this example has been fully restored with some tasteful upgrades. Be sure to register and bid if you want to see this classic Aussie Icon parked in your garage.
