This 1971 Buick GS Stage 1 is a fully restored and well documented example of a rare, high performance American Muscle Car. In the early 70’s the war was on between Ford, Chrysler, AMC, and General Motors, However over at GM there was competition between Chevrolet, Pontiac, Oldsmobile, and Buick who all had big V8 motors over the previous 400 cube limit.Buick pulled the trump card with a specially cast 455 cubic inch motor that only weighed 25 pounds more than a small bock Chev! And it certainly was High Performance in the STAGE 1 option. Huge valves , Big Cam, and a recalibrated Rochester 780 Four barrel carb made for ¼ mile times of 13.38 as tested by Motor Trend magazine in 1970. This example being fully restored and in the rare colour combo of triple black should send Buick fans into a frenzy!

Born with classic good looks, this Buick’s current condition comes courtesy of a complete, ground-up restoration that was completed in 2009. As evidenced by the body tag, it originally left the factory in code 19, GM Regal Black. The car was fully repainted during the resto with a black vinyl top along with new chrome, straight stainless trim and Stage 1 badging. The car sits over the factory style GS Rally wheels which have been widened to 10” in the rear before being wrapped in white letter T/A Galaxy tyres.

Open the doors and inside the car, you’ll find more great Buick styling wrapped in a mixture of black vinyl, bright stainless and rich wood grain applique. The front and rear bench seats are finished in black vinyl but it should be noted that a small section at the base of the drivers seat has come apart at the seam. The interior has a host of creature comforts including factory air conditioning, power steering and power disc brakes. There is a period style aftermarket steering wheel in place with boss kit to suit. In the boot is neatly finished with original style mat and the original spare wheel from 1971.

Performance is provided by the original, matching numbers 455ci Stage 1 V8 that has been fully rebuilt and upgraded to 1970 specs. The correct dual-snorkel air cleaner with functional bonnet vent intake sits on top of a 4-barrel carburettor. You will find ‘GS 455 Stage 1’ badging and factory style chrome valve covers. The Stage 1 Buicks were feared not only for their near 400 horsepower, but also the insane 510 lb/ft of torque they would leave the factory with. This Stage 1 has a bit more pop under the hood then when it left the factory thanks in part to the 70 spec heads and cam along with forged pistons.

Put the Stage 1 on a lift and you’ll see that the big mill is backed by an original GM Turbo-Hydramatic 400 3-speed automatic transmission, which spins a traditional GM 10-bolt with 3.42 ration LSD. The car features double A-arm front and 4-link rear suspension with correct power steering. Spent gases flow through aftermarket headers into a throaty, dual exhaust. Power front disc brakes, and rear drum are responsible for slowing the car. The car is fitted with the factory handling option which included big front and rear sway bars and axle connectors.

The market for authentic, investment grade Buicks is incredibly strong. The car comes complete with a very large documentation file including the original sales invoice, protect-o-plate, warranty booklet, various registrations over the years, picture of the car with original owners and restoration pictures. Don’t miss your chance to own this incredible piece of American muscle car history.
