This 1971 Ford XY Falcon has been through a ground up build into a multi-award winning custom show car. Those of you that follow Street Machine, Summernats and the Australian show scene will remember this Ford XY Sedan as “Blow Jo”. This car made headlines and magazine covers in 2008 when it hit the scene at Summernats 21 and took Top Modified, a place in the Elite Top 10 followed by both People Choice and PPG Supreme. After collecting a bunch of trophies in the show scene, the car changed hands and the new owner wanted more than just show car. He went about converting the car into a show quality streeter that he could actually register and get in and drive.

He bought the car in 2012 and after being inspected it was transported from Victoria to Brisbane and went straight into the workshop to begin its transformation. The bonnet and wild blower setup was removed and the engine stripped back to a bare block. It was then completely rebuilt as a tough 393ci Cleveland stroker with custom stack injection hidden under a new custom modified and colour matched flat bonnet. The engine build featured a Scat 4340 Crank, Scat I-beam rods, SRP Forged pistons, Moly ring set, ACL bearings, TCI flex plate, Howard roller cam, Howard mechanical lifters, Trick Flow power port 195 CNC Cleveland heads, CNC billet cross over intake manifold, CNC billet tappet covers and billet T-cover water pump. Like it was previously, the engine bay is still finished to an extremely high level in show quality.

The engine is paired to a rebuilt C4 automatic designed to handle 600hp with custom high stall converter. Power is fed to the rear wheels through a built nine inch diff with Truetrac limited slip centre, 3.91 ratio centre and 31 spline axles. The exhaust was also changed from a 4″ system back to a 3″ system to suit the new motor build. The suspension up front is the same coil over set up used in the original build as is the adjustable McDonald bros four link rear end with adjustable coil overs. The brakes have a new power booster hidden up under the dash with six piston VTTR Racing discs up front and four pistons in the rear. The whole underside of the car is customised with flat floor panels and underbody painted in matching candy purple with custom lightning graphics used throughout.

The outside of the car is essentially the same as it was at the peak of its show winning run but now with a flat bonnet fitted. The body has been smoothed and shaved with no exterior door handles, bumper bolts shaved and the custom boot opening with part mated to beaver panel. The smoothing doesn’t stop on the outside with a full smooth fire wall, reshaped strut towers, all new smooth radiator support panel, custom inner guards, smoothed underside of bonnet and boot and smoothed inside of the door jams. The whole body is painted inside and out in a PPG Candy Purple with custom GT style stripe ghosted down the side of the car as well as airbrushing on the underside and inside of the car. The look externally is completed with a set of 20” Intro billet wheels sitting up nicely in the guards.

The inside of the car is probably even more extreme than the outside. Firstly to get in you use the remote door poppers to open the shaved doors. Inside you will find a completely custom moulded and painted interior with four bucket seats trimmed in a contrasting cream leather. There is a full roll cage painted to match along with a custom smooth fiberglass moulded head lining. The dash is a custom moulded item with Autometer gauges and touch screen stereo head unit. The centre console flows all the way from the dash between the rear seats up to the custom parcel shelf.

With the update of the car completed in 2015, the car was mod plated for QLD and registered with the new rego INJ 393. It was then sold by us back in 2017 to the current owner. They have kept it in good condition using it sparingly over the last seven years and have decided its time for someone else to be the next chapter of this Aussie custom car icon’s story.
