This 1970 Mercury Cougar Eliminator is one rare American muscle car. The Cougar was the high end luxury style offering by Ford’s sister company Mercury, designed to steal some sales in the muscle car wars or the late 60s and early 70s. The Eliminator was the high impact edition of the Cougar, with bold muscle car colours, a choice of V8 engines and transmissions and additional spoilers and stripes to make it stand out from the crowd. There were only 2,267 Eliminators built in 1970 making them rare back when they were new, and exceedingly rare cars now, especially here in Australia.
This example comes to us from a private collection and has been neatly restored and is well presented. The car is also very well documented as a genuine Eliminator and comes with a Marti Report as well as original handbook, original sales invoice and build sheets. The car was built in the Dearborn Plant in Michigan, USA and rolled off the line in September of 1969. The car was an M code, 351ci 4V V8 with 1 code 3 speed manual transmission and 3.25 optional ratio diff. The car was finished in U code Competition Gold paint with 1A code Black bucket seats. Other factory options included Eliminator package, power steering, AM radio and Competition suspension.
The body of the car is well presented having been repainted in its signature Competition Gold colour at some stage. The car features the correct front spoiler, rear spoiler, hood scoop and blackouts for an Eliminator. The hideaway front headlights and large sequential tail lights are signature Cougar items. Inside the car is in factory presentation in Black vinyl with bucket seats up front. The shifter is the correct Hurst type with T-handle up top.
Under the bonnet is a 351ci 4V V8 engine paired to a four-speed Top loader manual transmission. The engine bay is well presented in a factory style presentation. The car also features power steering and a disc brake front end. Power is fed to the rear wheels through a 9” diff with 3.25 diff gears.
As mentioned earlier, the car does come complete with Marti Report, original books, original sales invoice and build sheets, yes, 2 of them. This Cougar Eliminator is a great collector muscle car for a guy who wants something that nobody else has.
