This 1963 Volkswagen Kombi has been fully restored into a super cool coastal cruiser. The car was purchased by the current owner almost 10 years ago from New Mexico in the USA who imported the bus to Australia. When the bus arrived, he was a little disappointed, it looked great in the photos but in person left a bit to be desired, it did however have all its original trim and parts. He sent the bus away to get a bit of a tidy up which escalated into a full restoration with some neat upgrades.

Starting with the body, it was completely stripped where rust was found in the usual locations. Any where that needed attention or looked as though it could in the near future was replaced. This included a complete new floor, part of the rear load compartment, battery box and right front dog leg. Once the repairs were complete, the car was sent for final body work before being completely repainted in its two tone off white over Sea Blue colour scheme in 2012. Other external upgrades include new halogen complete headlight units, with day time driving light fitted, new tail lights, new indicator lights up front, windscreen wiper arms and blades, new stainless steel sliding window glides, door mechanisms, stainless steel mirror arms with new mirrors and a complete set of door hardware with stainless aftermarket door handles key matched including the ignition. Completing the look externally is a set of genuine Fuchs Porsche 4.5″ and Deep 6 ” wheels with new tyres.

The interior of the bus has also received a full make over. There are three rows of bench seats with seats for 9 adults that have been fully retrimmed. The headliner is all new as are the rubbers and glass. The steering where was replaced along with all the dash knobs, buttons and grab handles. A new 0km Speedo and odometer was ordered from the VW Museum and fitted to the car. There is a old school look Retrosounds Bluetooth stereo with power outlets in the dash.

Powering the bus is a 1910cc flat four cyl air cooled engine. The engine features new alternator and starter motor along with a dual Kadron carburettor set up that was recently overhauled and tuned. An aftermarket stainless exhaust peaks it way out under the back and gives it a cool sound. The engine is paired to a Highway Flyer four speed manual transmission with Scat shifter. The front end is a new Wagens West adjustable narrowed and lowered front beam with Wilwood disc brakes and dual master cylinder. The rear end is a Bus Boys straight axle with rear disc brakes.

This split screen Kombi is one cool cruiser. Finished is a nice coastal colour scheme and with a bunch of driveability and cosmetic upgrades, it should be a fun car to make some memories in.
