1963.5 Ford Galaxie 500 XL Coupe

The Ford Galaxie was a full size family far in Ford’s line up that was available in a wide range of body styles, engine configurations and trim levels. The 1963.5 Galaxie Coupe is widely considered the sweet spot for Galaxie styling because it combines the more traditional styling cues with a new fastback style roofline that was released mid year in 1963. This new roofline vastly improved the looks of the car but was also intended to reduce drag on the race track where the Galaxie was being used to race NASCAR.

This particular example is about as cool as they come. It’s the 63.5 model with the fastback roof line everybody wants but it’s also the top of the line 500 XL specification with console and bucket seats and a big block 390ci V8 under the hood paired to an automatic transmission. The awesome features don’t stop there, this car is in one of the most desirable colour combos being gloss Black with Red trim.

We have been fortunate to play a big part in this car’s history with a good client of ours approaching us back in 2013 who specifically wanted a Black 63.5 Galaxie and asked us to help him bring one home.  Once the car arrived back in Australia, we were tasked with performing the right hand drive conversion on the car. The conversion involved sectioning the original steel dash and piecing it back together in a mirrored configuration along with using rack and pinion power steering. Even the wipers were relocated and fabricated to operate correctly for RHD. The engine was given a freshen up and reseal at the same time and four wheel disk brakes added along with billet wheels.

The car had already been very nicely restored when it was imported into the country. The owner always intended for the car to be a regular drive car and built it as such. While still very well presented, it does show minor signs of wear and use over the last few years. Likewise, the chrome work is very good in general but has also been on the car for quite some time and not free of imperfections.

Inside the trim is very neatly presented and the red colour really pops against the Black exterior. The bucket seats and console are a nice option on these cars. The dash cluster has aftermarket gauges discreetly sunk into place which could almost be mistaken as factory. Air conditioning has been added and works well for those hot summer days out cruising. A nice billet steering wheel sits front and center to the driver.

All said and done, this is an extremely cool cruiser for someone who want something unique to get out and drive. It ticks a lot of boxes in terms of rarity, desirability, and is jamb packed full of features. We are proud to be a big part of this car’s history and look forward to helping it begin a new chapter with its next owner.
