1955 Chevrolet Belair Sports Coupe  – Restomod

This 1955 Chevrolet Bel Air is a highly desirable “Sports Coupe” model that has undergone a full rebuild into an unsuspecting restomod. The car looks reasonably factory from the outside, but if you peek beneath the surface, everything has been modified to ensure the car drives like a modern vehicle. The original chassis has been completely removed in favour of an Art Morrison item. Art Morrison make some of the best modern chassis technology that can be retrofitted into a classic vehicle. The front end now features independent double wish bone suspension with adjustable Strange coil overs and rack and pinion power steering. The rear end is a triangulated four link with fully adjustable Strange coilovers. There are sway bars front and rear to round out the handling package.

Powering the beast is a 6.2L LS3 V8 engine prepared by Southern Performance Systems with aftermarket cam and valves. We are told in its current form the car is good for around 500hp at the flywheel. The engine is paired to a 4L60e 4 speed automatic transmission. Power is fed to the rear wheels by a braced 9” diff and Strange axles. A full stainless steel Mandrel bent custom twin exhaust system including custom headers runs all the way to the back of the car. A large polished aluminium radiator with thermo fans keeps everything cool up front. Pulling everything up is a set of Wilwood power disc brakes on all four corners.

The body of the car has been completely refinished in Shoreline Beige over Gypsy Red. The chrome and trim on the car are all in good condition. There is an accessory chrome front bumper grille guard mounted on the front end. The body of the car is straight and presents very well all round. The car sits low over a set of 15” steel wheels with original hubcaps and radial wide white wall tyres.

Inside, the interior looks completely factory with two-tone trim and beige corduroy style inserts over red vinyl throughout. The only indicator that something more modern is underneath is the neatly integrated air conditioning system vents and the Dakota digital gauges in the dash. The steering wheel is a slightly smaller diameter reproduction of the original for a sportier feel and more room in the cabin, a subtle change that most people will overlook. Lap belts have been fitted for safety in the front and rear. There are also a few modern features like intermittent wipers and cruise control for when you want to go on those long highway runs.

This nicely built ’55 coupe has travelled less than 6,000 miles since completion. The end result is a car that looks like a restored Chevy from 1955 but performs and handles like a modern HSV ClubSport.
