This 1953 Chevy Bel Air sports coupe is a timeless American classic that has been upgraded in a Southern Californian Lowrider Bomb style into a cool custom cruiser. The car began its make over in Moreno Valley, California where it was purchased by lowrider enthusiast Frank Ochoa. Frank had a plan to turn the car into a cool custom lowrider bomb and began hunting for as many rare accessories as possible.

Starting with the body, the car was sent off to Bobs Auto Body in Whittier, California who repainted the car in its factory colour of Sun Gold Yellow and India Ivory two tone. The firewall and inner fenders were also repainted at the same time. One of the hardest parts in building a lowrider bomb is the hunting down of period accessories which often involves countless hours of online hunting plus scouring swap meets and car shows. Frank was able to hunt down a huge variety of accessories for the car including visor, spot lights, wind splits, hood ornament, spotlight rear view mirrors, headlight visors, fender skirts, gravel guards, bumper guards front and rear, bumper extensions, conti kit rear end, dipped belt moulding, lower bloomer chrome trim, door handle guards and super rare, one piece side window shades. The car sits slammed down to the ground thanks to airbag suspension which was originally done by Advanced Design Fabrication in Whittier, California. The airbag system was then upgraded by Mex’s Garage in QLD with Accuair E-level air management with self-levelling and three preset ride heights. The exterior look is completed with a set of repainted factory steel wheels with ‘53 hubcaps and ‘57 tri bar spinners wrapped in wide white wall radial tyres.

The same accessories factory look continues into the interior. The trim was already in fantastic shape in the original two tone pattern. Again a host NOS period of accessories include traffic light viewer, vanity mirror and hat holder. With bench seats front and rear there is room for the whole family. There is a hidden stereo system using mostly Alpine components including an amplifier and 12 inch sub mounted into an old school style esky in the boot. The original Chevy steering wheel remains in place with column shifter automatic transmission.

Open the bonnet and you will find a very well presented engine bay housing the original 235ci Chevy ‘Blue Flame’ 6cyl engine which was fully rebuilt by German ‘Pelon’ Medrano in California. A set of porcelain coated headers feed a dual straight pipe exhaust system by Epstein’s Mufflers for that classic bomb Rhaspy sound. The engine is paired to the factory column shifted, two speed Powerglide automatic transmission which was rebuilt by Boston Transmissions in Pico Rivera, California. The factory diff and drum brakes remain in place. In the neatly detailed engine bay is a period air raid siren to let everyone know you’re coming.

This 1953 Chevy Bel Air Coupe has been neatly restored with some tasteful upgrades to transfer it into a legitimate, Californian style lowrider bomb. The Car was featured in July 2010 issue of Lowrider Magazine. Cars like this don’t come along very often and all of the rare NOS accessories on it aren’t things you can easily go out and buy.
