This is a neat example of a fully restored and tastefully upgraded 1947 Buick Super Convertible. These 40’s Buick convertibles have a timeless style about them from the factory and this one has been through a full nut and bolt rebuild.

Starting with the body, the car has been professionally repainted in a Harley Davidson colour called Amber Whiskey metallic. Outside of the necessary repairs, the body of the car remains true to factory styling with its sleek aerodynamic look. The chrome and brightwork on the car was all either refinished or replaced during the restoration. The convertible top had its mechanicals fully reconditioned and the canvas has been replaced using a Mercedes Benz style cloth in light tan. New seals were used on the doors, windows and bonnet along with all new safety glass. Completing the mild custom look on the outside is a set of 20-inch five-spoke ‘American Racing’ alloy wheels. The sale of the car does include a set of original style steel wheels wrapped in wide white wall tyres.

The interior of the car has been treated to a full custom retrim from top to bottom in a light tan German vinyl. The first thing you will notice is the car is right hand drive. The front features subtle but more modern bucket seats split with a custom centre console. The rear seat and door trims have been trimmed to match. The dash, steering column and tops of the doors are painted body colour to bring the outside in. The original style steering wheel and column shifter remain in place. A very nice option for this era is the power windows and power operated convertible top. Colour coded lap belts have been added for safety.

Under the side opening bonnet lives the factory 248ci Buick Fireball straight eight engine which was rebuilt approximately 3,000 kms ago. The engine block was chemically cleaned before receiving new rings, camshaft, reground big ends and mains, new valves and springs, new distributor, water pump and all new gaskets and seals. The engine is paired to the factory three speed column shifted, manual transmission which was reconditioned with new universal joints and bushes, new pressure plate, thrust bearing, hydraulic operation master and slave cylinder. Power is fed to the rear wheels via the factory diff which received new bearings, crown wheel pinion, and reset new wheel bearings.

The brakes have been upgraded using a Hooper stoppers front disc brake kit. They also received smaller rear wheel cylinders and a Vacuum booster plumbed to dual circuits with stainless-steel lines. The steering has been upgraded to a Retro-Pac rack and pinion setup with electric drive power pack from a late-model Mini. The suspension received reconditioned front shock absorbers with new bushes, control arms fitted with new bushes and threaded pins, new kingpins, bushes and thrust bearings. The springs in the rear have also been reset with new shock absorbers. The cooling system wasn’t overlooked with radiator tank removed, core cleaned, fan fitted and new welch plugs, hoses and fan belt. Likewise, the entire fuel system has been overhauled. For reliability, the car was converted over to a 12 volt electrical system with new starter motor, new alternator, new wiring with modern fuses and connections, new headlights and additional gauges to monitor fuel, temperature and oil.

This 47 Buick Super Convertible is an extremely rare and desirable classic. The car has been extensively restored with a host of tastefully upgrades both cosmetically and mechanically. Opportunities to purchase cars like this don’t come along very often so be sure to register and bid if you want to see this one parked in your garage.
