This 1932 Ford Phaeton has been completely custom built into a cool one off hot rod. To say this car will get people talking is an understatement, not only is it a cool four seater, open top hot rod, but its actually a body style that never existed from the factory. In 1932, Ford produced a four door convertible called a Phaeton, and a two door sedan called a Tudor, but they didn’t produce a two door Phaeton for that year like that had previous in the model A’s. This car is built using a real steel 1932 body, but has been cleverly modified into a car that shouldn’t exist, a two door phaeton. It appears as though the car began life as a four door phaeton with the rear doors welded up, B pillar moved back and longer tudor doors used with the frames removed from the top of them and custom fabricated to match. The result is certainly impressive and looks like a factory body.

The car retains its original steel guards but the windscreen has been switched to a DuVal style split windscreen for a cooler look. The car is painted a cool period Beige colour with custom pin striping throughout. The stance is a typical hot rod rake over a set of 15” Radar polished wheels with a typical big/little tyre combo.

Inside the rod has been fully retrimmed in a period deep red colour with all new carpets and original style seats. The dash features a full set of Autometer white faced gauges and there is a Lokar floor shifter for the automatic. A period Banjo style steering wheel is wrapped in red to match the trim. Importantly, there is enough room to seat the whole family which is unusual in a cool hot rod, especially one with an open top.

Under the bonnet is a late model, fuel injected Windsor out of an XR8 falcon. These are great engines but usually horribly ugly to look at. The boys in the garage got a little creative with this one and managed to make a custom plenum for the car and hide the throttle body and required sensors under a Cadillac air cleaner. This gives the engine bay a cool period look but retains everything that’s great about a fuel injected engine. The engine is paired to a matching four speed automatic transmission pulled from the same XR8 falcon. The chassis is a 32 Ford item with four bar, drop axle and transverse leaf spring front end and traditional buggy spring in the rear. The brakes feature discs on all four corners.

In a world where there are more 32 hot rods on the road than ever left the factory, its cool to have something really unique. Being able to have an open top hot rod, with traditional looks but also reliability and performance of modern fuel injection hidden under the bonnet, that will fit the whole family, is something that’s hard to beat.
