This 1932 Ford Hot Rod Roadster provides the perfect blend of traditional hot rod styling with modern performance and reliability. The intention of the build was to create something that looks correct for a late 40s / early 50s period Californian hot rod on the outside but have all the best of modern running gear underneath to make fast, fun and reliable to drive. The styling of this highboy roadster is heavily influenced by some of the most famous traditional hotrods ever built, taking styling cues from the Vic Edelbrock ‘32 and the Doane Spencer Roadster.

The car was built by well-known Aussie hot rod builder, John ‘Duck’ Wood from Deuce customs in Victoria to use as his personal car. The body naturally is a Deuce customs ’32 Roadster item with hidden hinges and deleted external handles. The bonnet is steel and uses a one piece top with fluted sides, all of which have been stretched 2 inches with an additional flute added to the sides for proportion. The grill is steel and framed by low mounted Guide style headlights with integrated indicators. One of the big styling pieces is the genuine Duvall split windscreen which has been customized to include integrated windscreen wipers. The rear of the car includes 50 Pontiac tail lights which have been counter sunk into the body, separate indicators mounted beside the fuel tank and a unique plate frame with integrated LED bulbs. The whole chassis and body have been painted in gloss black paint work because black and chrome never goes out of style. There are some cool details with the whole chassis filled and smoothed, headlight wiring moulded into the chassis rails and floating look front and rear spreader bars. There is a removable chopped style lift off convertible top that bolts on and off easily if you want to get out of the weather. The guards and running boards have been deleted in favour of tight fitting cycle guards for a period high boy look. The car sits on a set of 16” steel wheels with dress rings and Mercury hubcaps wrapped in staggered big/little period look Coker radial tyres.

Inside the car has been custom trimmed in Tan leather. The biggest feature inside is the 1940 Ford dash which has been custom moulded into the body. The dash features a custom ‘40 style gauge cluster, chrome vent in the middle, billet knobs and glove box on the passenger side. Front and centre is a 40 Deluxe steering wheel mounted to an aftermarket column. Being a manual transmission there is a Hurst shifter poking up from the floor and three Lokar street rod pedals including one which has been cleverly adapted to the fly-by-wire throttle. The seat is a custom bench which has been modified to sit as low as possible and trimmed in a tuck and roll style pattern in Tan leather. The door trims have been covered to match the seat. There is enough room inside for a six foot tall driver to comfortably drive the car. Lap sash seatbelts have been added for safety. For tunes while cruising there is a hidden Alpine Bluetooth stereo system with headunit and 12v outlet in the glove box and speakers hidden behind both the dash grille and behind the seat.  The boot has also been panelled out and trimmed and carpeted to match the rest of the interior.

Powering the rod is a late model, 6.0L LS2 Chevy fuel injected V8 engine. The engine itself remains factory for reliability and is extremely fast in a car that weighs well under 1000 kg. The engine is paired to a Tremec T56 six speed manual transmission and power is fed to the rear wheels through a nine inch differential. Exhaust gasses escape through a custom dual exhaust with removable caps half way along if you want some extra rumble. The chassis of the car is based on a Detroit Chassis but with some modifications. There is extra lateral bracing used throughout with the wheelbase of the car stretched two inches to accommodate the LS. The whole chassis is filled, smoothed and moulded with custom ‘floating’ front and rear spreader bars. The front suspension is a traditional four bar setup with transverse leaf spring while the rear is a four link with adjustable coil overs. The car is stopped by four wheel disc brakes with a Wilwood master and booster hidden up under the dash and EB2 Falcon discs up front with VS Commodore style rears. The entire underside of the car has been gloss painted including the underside of the floors with various chrome arms and components used.

The car was completed in 2013 where it was debuted at the Victorian hot rod show. The car has been engineered and registered previously in Victoria as well as mod plated under LH10 in QLD for full registration. During Duck’s ownership, he drove the car from Victoria to Western Australia and back as well as up to Queensland on two occasions, a testament to its reliability. Given the car uses all modern and locally available mechanicals, it is easily serviced and maintained. The car looks awesome, is scary fast when you want it to be and sounds incredible but reliable and user friendly enough to throw the keys to your partner to take out for the weekend.
